Core information technology job postings in the United Kingdom declined in the first quarter of 2019, down 21% from the fourth quarter of 2018 and 40% from the first quarter of 2018. There were more than 160,000 IT job postings in the UK in Q1 2019.
The UK unemployment rate was 3.9% for the three-month period ending in February 2019, down slightly from the 4.0% unemployment rate in the previous three months. This is also down from 4.2% a year ago and the lowest unemployment rate since the November 1974 to January 1975 period. Between December 2018 and February 2019, more than 32 million people were employed and 1.34 million people were unemployed and looking for work in the UK.
The size of the IT workforce in the United Kingdom continues to grow and is projected to increase by more than 14,000 jobs in 2019, and by 4% between 2018-2023.
The five top employers in the UK with the most IT job postings in Q1 are:
- National Health Service
- Fresh Group Limited
Five core IT occupations accounted for 70% of the base of IT workers in 2018:
- Programmers and software development pros
- IT specialist managers
- IT and telecommunication pros
- IT operations technicians
- IT business analysts, architects and systems designers
